OUTLINE

Purpose: Assist new managers or managers assigned to new positions to keep their heads straight. Encourage new managers to have a strong desire to be excellent at managing. Encourage new managers to eliminate excuses for not applying their own principles in their own area of responsibility. Help new managers create the desire to develop people of good character and strong leadership.

Design program to be a short-cut explanation of characteristics, behaviors and practices of managers who strive for excellence in management abilities. Information is drawn from forty years of personal experiences, training schools and books written by or about managers. These include coaches, corporation leaders, military leaders, teachers, to name a few. My experience includes working for and with some excellent managers. Also there were marginal managers. I wonder if they know who they are?

Refrain from anecdotes, also known as "war stories" the memory of which are stimulated in the course of writing. However, hope that the reader is stimulated to his or her own "war stories" and examples of good and bad managers. Feel free to use "war stories" in my cover letter to Mark.

Objective: To have people who have read this guide to go forward and upward to achieve success and wealth through self improvement. The power is not in the guide. The power is in the person. People who have had special impact on me begin with my parents, of course. Almost every teacher from first grade on gave me something of value. Perhaps I should list the names of those who impacted me in a special and positive way, out of respect and appreciation. Miss Armenta (first grade) Sisters Patrick Cingaloni, Simon Edelhuber, Frederick, Pancraitius, Scholastica Vogelpohl, completing elementary school. At Subiaco, Father Fintan, Gerald, Victor, Christopher were of special help. At StJohn's, Father Walsh and Micek. Friends who had a special and positive influence from earliest times through high school were Joe Ronnie Gingerich, Edward Rutherford, Emmett Hoolihan, Howard Strabala. Grown ups who had a good and positive influence during my youth were Bertha and Milton Gingerich, Jesse and Mildred Rutherford and my grandma Pauline Garrich. In the United States Air Force there were many people who had a positive influence on me. Head and shoulders above the rest was my mentor, Major James P. Smith. After my military tour, my in-laws Josephine and Gene Holbert were outstanding in encouragement and leading. My wife Marilyn was and still is absolutely the most influential and supportive person in my life. In business I was trained and guided by many. The most outstanding for me were Dick Stephens and Johnny Johnson. Then Raymond Dodson and Jack Treend taught me a lot of things. More recently the list includes Mel Gilmer, Bob Koch and Pete Appell. I'm missing some excellent people but Ed Englehart taught me so much. John Dumble and Bill Kinsell will never know the good influence they exerted. Non business associate friends include AI Powers, an excellent leader who constantly works on his management skills.
